During this season of Thanksgiving, we at Gentle Professional Foot Care want to make sure that our patients take a moment to be grateful for their feet. Most of the time we take our feet for granted as we stand, walk, run, jump, climb and balance the weight of the rest of our body every day. Your feet are complex and incredible structures that deserve some recognition. Consider the following:
·Each foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints, 19 muscles and 107 ligaments.
·The 52 bones in a pair of feet are approximately one quarter of all the bones in your body.
·There are 250,000 sweat glands in a pair of feet which can produce up to half a pint of perspiration a day.
·The soles of your feet contain more sensory nerve endings per square centimeter than any other part of your body.
·During a typical day of walking the total forces on your feet can equal the number of tons of a fully loaded cement truck.
·The average person walks 8,000 to 10,000 steps each day. This adds up to approximately 115,000 miles in a lifetime—that’s the equivalent of circling the globe more than 4 times.
·A 2.5 inch heel can increase the load on your forefoot by 75%.
·When you run, the pressure exerted on your feet can be as much as four times your body weight.
·Reducing your weight by one pound takes four pounds of pressure off your knee joints.
Your feet are an early warning system for the rest of your body, being the place where symptoms of diseases such as arthritis and diabetes as well as many nerve and circulatory disorders often first show up.
Kind of gives you new respect for your feet, right? Show your thanks by wearing well-made shoes that fit your feet properly and not ignoring foot pain.
