At Gentle Professional Foot Care we know that no one plans to get an injury to their ankle or foot. Having a clear idea in the back of your mind of how to react in an injury scenario will help you know what to do if you ever find yourself in that unfortunate situation. Below are some do’s and don’ts to remember:
DON’T: believe popular medical myths, such as “play through the pain” or “if you can walk on it, the injury doesn’t require treatment.” Get off your feet as soon as possible. Bearing weight on an injured foot is likely to make it worse. If the pain is bad, it may alter the way you walk and lead to a secondary injury.
DO: get the injury evaluated promptly by a medical professional. If there is no athletic trainer or other medical personnel where you are when you hurt yourself, make an appointment at our Venice office by calling: 941-493-7999. Let our staff know the reason for your call and we’ll get you in to see the podiatrist, Dr. Charles A. Suleskey, as soon as possible.
DO: use the RICE regimen until the time of your appointment. In addition to Rest, be sure to apply Ice and Compression to the injured area and Elevate the affected foot so that it is at or above heart level. These steps will reduce pain, swelling and inflammation.
DON’T: apply ice directly to bare skin. Wrap the ice or ice pack in a towel and put on the injured area for 10-20 minutes at a time, several times a day with breaks in between.
DO: make sure the compression wrap is not too tight. You will know that it needs to be loosened if you feel more pain, see swelling or feel coolness in the part of your foot below the wrap, or if you experience numbness or tingling.
DO: follow all the foot doctor’s instructions after your appointment. Be sure to complete the full course of therapy as recommended. Your foot or ankle may feel better, but may still not be fully rehabilitated. It takes time to build up the muscles surrounding an injured area that provide necessary support and prevent re-injury to the same area.
